Greener Grass Publishing finally got the delivery confirmation today that the new copies of Horse Pens 40 Bouldering will be arriving on Monday, March 1st! So, if you pre-ordered on the website, then your book will be shipped to you on that day. You will receive an email when it has shipped. If you would still like to receive the pre-sale discount, order before Monday March 1st, when the price will go up to $24.95.

Unfortunately, this means that we will not have copies for sale at the Shades Crest Showdown on February 27th. But, we will have a few copies to show people and there will be some to win in the raffle.

Greener Grass Publishing will be selling copies at the HP Rocks Climbing and Music Festival at Horse Pens 40 on March 6th. Bring $25 cash, and get your copy signed by the author Adam Henry. Copies will be shipping to stores, retailers, and gyms around the world beginning March 7th, so if you have a favorite store you’d like to pick it up from, look for it then.

Deadpoint Magazine Ad

Horse Pens 40, Mainpage, Reviews Comments Off

The new issue of Deadpoint Magazine has hit shelves and is on display digitally here. Greener Grass Publishing is psyched to see our new ad in this latest issue and we think it looks pretty good. Although its not one that will make you laugh, like Deadpoint’s ad in the new Horse Pens 40 guidebook, which is probably the funniest climbing advertisement ever, we think it looks good and are happy to be partners with DPM.

Also of note, there will be a photo gallery of the bouldering of Horse Pens 40 by photographers Dan Brayack and Jeff Wales up on the Climbing magazine website in the next few days. Both of these guys’ photos are featured in Horse Pens 40 Bouldering.

Shades Crest Showdown Bouldering Comp

Events, Horse Pens 40, Moss Rock Preserve Comments Off

Just wanted to let you all know that Greener Grass Publishing will be at the Shades Crest Showdown Bouldering Competition at Moss Rock Preserve on February 27th. This should be a really fun time, as the comp is endurance format. There will also be trail work and clean up, which is a very good thing, as well as beer, partying, etc.

Not to mention, there “might” be copies of the new Horse Pens 40 Bouldering guidebooks, which includes Moss Rock Preserve, for sale. Bring cash. I say might, because at this point the delivery date is up in the air, but there’s a chance. Stay tuned and I will keep you posted for sure. Regardless, there will be copies to check out and look at while there, and there will also be free copies to give away as prizes as well.

For more information on the comp go to the First Avenue Rocks website. Can’t wait to see you there!

Horse Pens 40 Bouldering Reviews

Horse Pens 40, Reviews Comments Off

In the last couple days the new guidebook Horse Pens 40 Bouldering has received a couple of reviews on the web. The first one comes from Brian Runnells who runs Climbingnarc.com. Amongst other things, he says about the book:

Written by longtime local Adam Henry, the 184 page Horse Pens 40 Bouldering has everything one would expect from a guidebook in 2010 including full color maps, picture topos for many boulders and action photos all in an easy-to-read layout, and an exhaustive list of problems (including variations for many of them).  Instead of being superfluous or hard to follow, Henry draws on his vast knowledge of the area to carefully explain every problem (perhaps a little too well if you like figuring things out on your own).  Be forewarned though:  the grades given out are sandbagged not forgiving of any excuses about conditions weaknesses one might have when it comes to climbing on slopers and many problems have lower grades than what was shown in the Dr. Topo guide.  Go back and adjust your scorecards accordingly…

and:

One thing that cannot be ignored when reading the book is the infusion of Henry’s personality into all aspects of the guidebook.  Whether it is his take on the previously mentioned stiff grades (“Please feel free to whiteout whatever is written and put whatever you want”) or his fight to keep “The Southern Way” alive amidst today’s “cloud of internet spray, rankings, and the pursuit of menial level shoe sponsorship”, Henry is sure to let you know how he feels.  Despite living with my head in the aforementioned cloud of internet spray, and contributing to it on a near daily basis, I didn’t really find Henry’s point of view overwhelming nor did it detract from the overall quality of the book.

Overall a nice and fair review, and one which we are happy for. The second review comes from Jamie Emerson of B3Bouldering.com, who also helped out the process of the guide by contributing a couple of pictures for use within. Thanks Jamie! Here’s what he had to say:

Adam is an old timer who has lost a bit of a step, slowly becoming out-of-touch with todays modern bouldering scene. Nevertheless, he probably knows what he is talking about more than anyone when it comes to bouldering in the Deep South. His book is filled with hilarious stories and wonderful testimonies from many climbers (including Fontainebleau local Stephan Denys) who have fallen in love with the absolutely perfect rock in Alabama. Adam tells it like it is, and his new guidebook is definitely worth a buy. HP40 is a very special place, and his book does an excellent job of getting that across. Well done!

If you’ve seen the book and would like to contribute something to the above reviews, please feel free to do so in the comments section below. Thanks!

Horse Pens 40 Bouldering Advance Copies

Horse Pens 40, Updates Comments Off

Advance copies of Horse Pens 40 Bouldering came into the office a few days ago, which is really exciting. After months of hard work and only seeing the images and words on the computer screen, it is very exciting to see everything in book form, exactly how you always dreamed it was going to be. I am very happy with the way it looks and I think you will be too. I have spent the last 2 days shipping out the advances to advertisers, photographers, and shops who will be selling the book. So many more people deserve a copy, but there were only 40 to go around, so I had to be selective. You will be able to check out advance copies on display at First Avenue Rocks in Birmingham, Horse Pens 40 of course, Mountain High Outfitters, Alabama Outdoors, TBA in Chattanooga, hopefully Escalade Rock Gym in Georgia, and hopefully Rock/Creek Outfitters in Chattanooga. Look for up coming reviews of the guidebook as well. I will keep you posted when I see them. Just a reminder, if you would like to pre-purchase the book, you can do so at a discount here on the Greener Grass Publishing website, and be the first one to have your book shipped out when the bulk shipment arrives. Highly recommended!

On another note, the weather is pretending it’s Colorado here in Chattanooga. We are hoping to get out bouldering at Rocktown this weekend, but there’s already 2 inches of snow on the ground at our house – bummer. Come on sun!

The Beta

Videos Comments Off

Check out this short movie about me made by Atlanta filmmaker Andrew Kornylak called The Beta. It sort of tells a little bit about the story behind how I met Adam Henry, eventually moved to Chattanooga with my girlfriend Jill, and started this company – Greener Grass Publishing – which eventually led to the publication of the Horse Pens 40 Bouldering guidebook. Of course, there is a lot of the story left out, which you can read about on the About Greener Grass Publishing page if you are interested. The focus of the movie isn’t really me, it’s actually a couple of classic boulder problems at Little Rock City in Tennessee called Super Mario and The Mystery Groove, which I somehow managed to make look easier than they felt in the 98 degree heat of July when Read more
