Well, the time has come to let someone else take over the reigns of Greener Grass Publishing and its guidebooks. Beginning in 2015 Rockery Press will be handling all sales and distribution of Greener Grass Publishing Guidebooks.
The first editions of Stone Fort Bouldering and Horse Pens 40 Bouldering have completely sold out and are being updated before release of their second editions. Rockery Press is handling these updates and second editions, and the new titles will be available from them. The Obed: A Climber’s Guide to the Wild and Scenic is still in print and available for purchase from Rockery Press.
Greener Grass Publishing was started with the vision of giving back to the climbing community, and we are very proud of what we were able to accomplish in a few short years. But of course the only constant is change, and my life has changed in ways that I am no longer able to give the community what it deserves. The information contained in our guidebooks belongs to the community, so it is important to me that someone local, motivated, and intimate with the areas and the community continue what I began. Cody Averbeck and Micah Gentry at Rockery Press are exactly such people, and will continue to make sure that this information is available to the public and climbers worldwide while giving back to the climbing community. Thank you all so much! Peace and Love!
Like we do at the end of every year, Greener Grass Publishing recently tallied up the sales from our various guidebooks and donated a portion of the proceeds to climbing related advocacy groups. We are proud to announce that for the year 2012 we were able to donate $1066! From the sales of the Stone Fort Bouldering guidebook we donated $559 to the SCC and had them earmark it specifically for their purchase of the Hospital Boulders in Alabama. From sales of The Obed: A Climber’s Guide to the Wild and Scenic we were able to donate $506 to the ETCC, which they will use maintaining climbers access to various areas of the Obed. Overall it was a fantastic year for us and we hope you had a great year as well. Here’s to a Happy New Year!
Happy Holidaze everyone! It’s that crazy time of year where we all go out and spend waaay more money than we have or should. I am just as guilty as the rest. The good news is that climbing guidebooks from Greener Grass Publishing make fantastic gifts! When you give a guidebook as a gift, you are really not giving that person simply a book. They will use the guide to go on adventures and create memories. So you are giving them an experience, one that they will remember and cherish, and what is more valuable than that?
For those interested, Saturday December 22nd is that last day I can ship out a book via USPS Priority Mail and have it arrive on Christmas Day, so plan accordingly.
Happy Holidaze! and Happy Climbing!
Greener Grass Publishing will be closed from November 5th thru November 13th. Unfortunately we do not have anyone in place to ship books ordered during this time. All books ordered will be shipped on Wednesday the 14th. Thank you for understanding, and Happy Climbing!
Summer can be hot. Hopefully you can find a nice place to get wet and cool off when temperatures climb too high. Summer is also the time of summer break and long road trips. So take advantage of your time off. Don’t worry about the heat and just get out there and climb! Have fun!
Greener Grass Publishing will be closed from June 20th to July 5th because we are getting married in the mountains and then traveling to Mexico for a week for our honeymoon. Due to our recent move we do not have anybody lined up to ship books for us while we are out of town. Sorry for the inconvenience, but please do not order books that you need shipped until July 5th. Any orders placed through the website will be shipped on that day, but we will not be able to ship them sooner. Thanks so much for visiting Greener Grass Publishing! Happy Climbing!
Greener Grass Publishing has moved to Crestone, Colorado! Crestone is a small town which sits at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the great San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. This move has been in the works for a long time and we are very excited to be working and living in such a fantastic spot.
The move will be fully completed and everything should be operational again by the first week of June, so please bear with us. All orders will still be shipped as they come in with little to no interruption of service. Our contact info has stayed the same, although our shipping and mailing addresses are now different (please see Contact Page).
Greener Grass Publishing has a number of projects in the works that we want to share with everyone. With luck, all of these will be released within the next year, so stay tuned for more info. In no particular order:
Little River Canyon Rock Climbs by Adam Henry
One of the most extensive sport climbing areas in the south has long been shrouded in mystery, kept secret by those in the know. But even those folk really only knew about a very small percentage of the climbs established on the cliffs surrounding the Little River Canyon in northeastern Alabama. There has been talk of this guidebook happening for the past few years, but recent events have finally spurred longtime canyon developer and historian Adam Henry to start snapping those cliff photos and putting pen to paper. Adam promises that this book will be complete and accurate! Work has commenced, look for this one next winter.
Chattanooga Trails by Randy Whorton
Wildtrails founder and director and the director of the Rock/Creek Race Series Randy Whorton is sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of the trails of the Chattanooga area in this first ever guidebook. Within 30 minutes of Chattanooga there are over 60 trailheads to hundreds of different trails and loops, and Randy has traveled pretty much every one of them. As the number of mountain bike trails in the area continues to grow, and participation in trail races is counted by the thousands each year, there is an ever increasing desire for more knowledge about Chattanooga’s very own backyard. Look for this one around the end of the summer.
Rumbling Bald Bouldering by Chris Dorrity
The first edition of Chris Dorrity’s Rumbling Bald Bouldering guide is nearly sold out. Chris has teamed up with Greener Grass Publishing to rework the guide for a second, larger edition. Luckily, since the first edition came out an entirely new boulderfield has been discovered at Rumbling Bald – the Hanging Chain. This guide will include plenty of updates to the older addition, as well as all the new boulders and problems. Look for this book next spring.
And last but not least:
The Cafe Aion Cookbook by Dakota Soifer
Greener Grass Publishing’s first venture into the non-guidebook publishing realm, The Cafe Aion Cookbook is a collaboration between three long time friends (Dakota Soifer, Caroline Treadway, Andy Wellman) to bring to the public the secrets behind Dakota Soifer’s acclaimed cuisine at Cafe Aion, located on the Hill in Boulder, CO. Featuring incredibly flavorful shared plates crafted from local produce and meats, Cafe Aion has garnered quite the attention and following since it opened two short years ago. The Cafe Aion Cookbook will bring guidebook-style layouts to describe the recipes in a step-by-step manner that should prove to be a genre-bender. Almost a year in the works thus far(!), look for this book by next holiday season.
Happy New Year! We here at Greener Grass Publishing hope that 2012 is a great year for you!
As part of our mission to give back proceeds from our guidebooks to the non-profit organizations which help preserve those areas for the climbers which use them, Greener Grass Publishing is proud to announce that we were able to donate more money to these organizations this past year than ever before! The East Tennessee Climber’s Coalition was our big winner as we were able to give them $638 this year which came from sales of the Obed guidebooks. We also made a donation to the Southeastern Climbers Coalition of $609, which came from sales of the Stone Fort Bouldering guidebooks. Last but not least, Horse Pens 40 Bouldering guidebook author Adam Henry donated all of the money he earned from sales of that book this year to the Alabama Bouldering Fund, which he created, which is saving for an eventual purchase of some boulders in Alabama, and in the mean time is helping local efforts to replace dangerous anchor bolts at popular Alabama sport crags.
2012 is shaping up to be a big year for Greener Grass Publishing. While we continue to work to bring you new guidebooks to great climbing areas, we are also planning to branch out into new areas with our books, taking our trademark style and employing it bring you titles about Mountains, Trails, and even Food. Stay tuned for updates as our next books near completion!
For those of you thinking about purchasing Greener Grass Publishing guidebooks for the holidays: DO IT! Just know that the last day that we can ship you a book via USPS Priority Mail and have it arrive by Christmas is Tuesday, December 20th. So order by that day to receive your book in time!
On another note, in the December issue of Get Out Chattanooga there is a full page article and interview with me (Andy Wellman) about myself, Greener Grass Publishing, and our rock climbing guidebooks. Click Here to read the article online, or pick up a copy on news stands if you live in Chattanooga. A big thank you to the editor Mark Jones for the piece!
